Hawaii's own Big Fat Greek Wedding!
The wedding little girls dream of occurred on December 28, 2002. Where to begin and how to describe such an awesome event without losing all its magic is very difficult but I will give it a try.
The wedding ceremony was held at Saints Constantine & Helen, Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Pacific where Bill Doherty had carefully decorated it with wreaths, white roses, lighting, tulle, and various white flowers. These decorations started from the outside leading you into the cathedral where The Phaeacian Chorus and Cathedral Choir welcomed the guests as they arrived.
The traditional Greek Sacrament of Holy Matrimony was performed by Rev. Dr. Nicholas V. Gamas in Greek and English with the choirs singing certain parts of the ceremony. The Stephana was crossed over the heads of the bride and groom by the Koumbaros (best man), Symeon. Then the couple was led around the alter three times by Father Nic while Koumbaros Symeon held the ribbon that joined the Stephana, and the Maid of Honor, Jennifer followed.
Susan had decided on hiring a Limo Bus to transport the wedding party to and from the Pacific Club. Mr. Toguchi, the Limo Bus driver, turned out to be a trooper. Although a valet service was hired parking was tight. Mr. Toguchi, after delivering the wedding party to the cathedral made several trips to and from the Pacific Club transporting guests.
The Pacific Club was also decorated by Bill. The centerpieces were painted gold and silver birdcages with flower arrangements and floating candles. The tables were adorned with favors galore.
The reception was kicked off with a traditional Lion Dance and fire crackers. As the last course was served a Polynesian Dance Troop from Farrington High School performed for Susan and Tom and their guests. The performance was amazing and well done. Guests who had traveled from all over the mainland were dancing in their seats, some had to get up and move to the rhythm of the beating drums. That was not the highlight however, the bride lead the wedding party and their guests in the traditional Greek Dance while plates were broken.
Susan and her parents were a great joy to work with, their love and respect for each other was very refreshing and wonderful to witness.
